Pian saimme huomata istuvamme alakoulun luokan peralla seuraamassa khmerin kielen oppituntia.

First we went to see the Wat Thiem museum where is a memorial stupa containing the skulls and bones of people killed when the site served as a Khmer Rouge prison. The prison had before been actually a Chinese school. Although the area was full of Japanese tourists and the stupa was small it really made an effect. How someone can do something like that? And actually what is Khemr Rouge about? In 1975 the Khmer Rouge took over charge in Cambodia and began total restructuring of society. The entire populations of Phnom Penh and provincial towns were forced to march in the countryside and work as slaves. The Khmer Rouge leader Pol Pot thought that education was for nothing and intellectuals were systematically wiped out. For example if you knew foreign languages that was reason enough to be killed. Khmer Rouge rule was brought to an end by the Vietnamese on 7 January 1979. Between those years according to different estimates about 1,3-2 million people died in Cambodia. The Khmer Rouge is still affecting the Cambodian peoples lives as still some of the leaders are waiting for their trial today. It's amazing how quickly though the country has survived and heeled from the time and started the developing. I really admire the Cambodian people for that.
After the museum we were supposed to drive to the city but then we made a little turn. We saw a sign where it read "teacher training college". Me and Kate are both studying education so of course we had to go and see how things go in Cambodia ! When we came to the school yard it was full of little children and older boys and girls coming from their lunchbreak. Some of the boys started to talk with us and soon we noticed that we were in the back of the classroom and we were attending a khmer language class. Students were 6 years old and there were about 50 students in one room ! I really admire the teacher .. After a while we left from the classroom and the boys showed us their college and told little bit about Cambodian education system and their studies. It was so interesting and I was so fascinated ! Couldn't believe it that in one moment we were there listening and seeing the school and talking to these guys and that they were so firendly and everything. Totally broadening and unforgettable experience ..

Siem Reap offered more unforgettable moments as next morning we woke up 4.15 and went to see the sunrise to Angkor Wat. So beautiful ! And cycling in the darkness to the temple and seeing the sunrise .. The whole experience was so great. It costs 20 $ for one day to go and see temples of Angkor and I think it's it worth it and it was totally enough for me (as you can also buy three or one week ticket). We arrived to the temple around 6 am and it took about 6 hours with the bicycle (that's by the way the best option to do it ! tuk-tuks, forget!) to go around all interesting places like Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, Bayon, The Terrace of the Elephants and Ta Prohm.. As in the end every temple started to look the same and also we got really tired. But the visit was great and the beautiful temple of Bayon and the grand Angkor Wat and the jungle-like Ta Prohm really were worth to visit. Little Kati felt herself even more little there. And the Angkor is the heart of Cambodia so if you ever go to Cambodia you can't miss the temples.

After visiting the country's cultural and spiritual capital it was time to go and visit the official capital Phnom Penh. The hilarious karaoke bus trip to Phnom Penh was entertaining and soon we werei n the middle of chaos ready to start the hide-and-seek game with Lao visas ..
